About A-Sun WU

A-Sun Wu is an internationally acclaimed artist known for his vivid, totemic visual language rooted in tribal aesthetics, inspired by his travels in Africa, the Amazon, and Papua New Guinea. These journeys have profoundly shaped his artistic vocabulary, combining painting, sculpture, and installation. Notably, he represented Taiwan at the International Art Biennale of São Pau in Brazil for three consecutive editions starting from1969 and he was also awarded the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He has exhibited in major institutions across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, including the Fine Arts Museums of Taipei, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, Hakone and Utsukushigahara Open-Air Museums in Japan, Ikeda Museum of the 20th Century Art, Urasoe Art Museum, Santo Tirso Museum, The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Contemporary Art Museum of Vilafamés, National Gallery of Andorra, Paul Valéry Museum, Stämpfli Foundation and Cernuschi Museum. His work often explores the intersection of ancient cultural traditions and contemporary identity, infused with a spiritual and mythical resonance. Wu’s practice continues to challenge and expand the boundaries of modern Taiwanese art through his unique blend of primitivism and cosmopolitan experience.
